Seven CAB members, 4 staff members and 1 guest attended the September 2003 meeting of the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).
Dr.
Roberts opened the meeting with a report on the site's performance:
· Our site is off probationary status as of the end of July 2003.
· The site's accruals were down for July, but were good for September and the site passed a performance evaluation in this month.
· The site evaluation teams continue to be pleased with our site's performance.
· The PI search continues with two candidates, Dr. William O'Brien, current faculty staff member and Dr. David Wolf from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
· The unit has applied for a Virology Support Lab to do genotyping and resistance testing, as well as work in the area of hepatitis research. Current staff member, Rick Pyles, would head the lab. This lab would assist the site in performing scientific work, aid in the recompetition applications, increase the ability to manage co-infected patients, and give us the possibility of doing HVC research.
· Funds that were withheld from the site's budget have not been reinstated.
· UTMB has been granted status as a Regional Center of Excellence as 1 of 2 national centers for bioterrorism.
Report
from Carrie:
· There are currently 11 ACTU studies and 1 industry-sponsored study open to accrual
· Two protocols are currently pending (5157, L-carnitine and 5163, a bone density study).
