Three CAB members, 2 staff members and 3 guests attended the May 2004 meeting of the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).
Dr. Roberts has stepped aside as Director of the Infectious Diseases (ID) Division to devote more time to his lab. Glen Mayhall MD has assumed the role of interim Director until a permanent replacement is named
Dr. Roberts has recommended to UTMB Administration that William A. O’Brien III MD be named the permanent Director and Principal Investigator of the ACTU. This change will become official upon Executive Committee and DAIDS approval. This is Dr. Roberts’ last CAB meeting as PI of the Unit. He will continue to be supportive of the Unit and any reorganization to optimize efforts.
Dr. Bell is the Medical Director of the Virology Clinic, replacing Dr. Paar who resigned that position, but is still active in his other roles in the ID Division.
UTMB will be a testing site for National HIV Testing Day activities being coordinated on Friday, June 25, by the Galveston County Health Department. Volunteers to help with ACTU/CAB info that day are appreciated.
Discussion about topics or programs for future CAB meetings included presentation on ACTG A5197 therapeutic vaccine study; women and HIV, including medical ethicist to discuss new legislation granting legal status to the fetus and possible prosecution of women with HIV/AIDS who do not seek prenatal care to prevent transmission.
