Six CAB members, 2 staff members
and 5 guests attended the March 2004 meeting of the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical
Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).
The search for a permanent
ACTU Director/PI continues. A
former fellow and another candidate are being recruited to fill needed faculty
positions. Dr. Roberts provided an
update as to the upcoming ACTU recompetition from information presented at the
recent AACTG Leadership Retreat.
Cheryl Kaplan from the UTMB Theater Outreach and Education (TOE) program presented information about TOE and a video documenting the production of a performance project focusing on environmental health education for children. TOE uses theater as a technique/tool to inform, educate, raise awareness and to establish dialogue from people who come from diverse settings. It has been incorporated into the medical school setting to better communicate science and medical findings to lay people. Cheryl directed “The Unspeakables”performance project which included a piece on living with HIV. Cheryl is interested in extending “The Unspeakables” concept to a project focused specifically on HIV/AIDS. There was discussion about creating this project in collaboration with CAB, local ASOs and community members. A planning group was formed to meet at a later time separate from CAB meeting time to further develop this idea. A project proposal for this program was distributed.

unfinished business will be put on next month's agenda.
