Five CAB members, 4 staff members and 0 guests attended the June 2004 meeting of the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).
Dr. O達rien outlined some goals for the ACTU over the next year.
His primary goal is to keep the present ACTU and Clinic staff focused on the care and research done, but also work on retention issues. Dr. O達rien and Dr. Mayhill have been meeting individually with staff regarding their thoughts on the strengths and weakness of the ACTU and clinic. They hope to find opportunities for improvement. It was recommended that they meet with the CAB about this as well.
He would like to see the UTMB痴 ACTU work on international networking and he has begun to lay the groundwork for this.
Dr. O達rien shared that we would be up for
renewal this year and that the call for applications would probably be out
in October 2004. In order to
have a good chance for renewal, we must increase the number of enrollments,
keeping retention in mind, over the next six months.
Open discussion followed about the difficulties with enrollment (clinical and administrative). The group reminded staff that an Outreach Coordinator was essential. Dr. O達rien reported that the position had been approved and would be posted soon.
Drs. O達rien and Bell next gave an overview of the following studies: A5197 and A5211 and two CAB drafts: A5220 and A5221. (Handouts with specifics are available through Carrie.) Everyone was asked to help promote these studies. Those present felt they had worthwhile benefits.
Dr. Bell shared some brief remarks related to women and HIV. She has begun to look for funding to do a community forum at Open Gates in August. It was suggested that another venue might draw in a larger group. Dr. Bell also reported that the ACTU Clinic would be closing on Fridays in September 2004. Arrangements would be made for emergency call-ins and drop-ins.
Due to the fact that little time remained, new CAB business was tabled until next month痴 meeting. There was further brainstorming related to community outreach as a CAB project.
