CAB MEETING MINUTES

June 24 , 2003

Six CAB members, 2 staff members and 2 guests attended the June 2003 meeting of the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).

·        Dr. Roberts reported on AACTG Site Evaluation Subcommittee and Executive Committee performance review through June 15, 2003.   Both groups were pleased with improved accrual performance at our ACTU.  They voted to lift restrictions on funding.  However, the ACTU will be subject to an additional review for the months of July and August during  September 4th Committee meetings.  They have also requested an update on the Unit’s leadership and investigator structure during the September meeting.

·        Dr. Roberts also reported on the Executive Committee call for re-competition for site labs with preference for labs able to work with HCV and HIV.

·         It was reported that certain inmate-suitable clinical trials are still not open to TDCJ participation, due to conflicts and complications in the TDCJ approval process.  There is currently 1 trial (A5127) open to this population; two trials (A5135 and A5149) are pending approvals at this time.

·        There was discussion about availability/accessing pharmaceutical assistance programs for HIV drugs.  Dennis offered to contact the manager of Texas’ HIV Medication Program and set up speaking engagement at future CAB meeting.

Discussion was brought up about the CAB sponsoring local event to observe National AIDS Latino Awareness Day which is in October.  There is much interest in the community.  John will serve as coordinator.
