CAB MEETING MINUTES

July 26, 2005 

Six CAB members, 1 staff member and 1 guest attended the July 2005 meeting of the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).

Report from Dr. O'Brien

      ·  Nothing to report - Dr. O’Brien was out of the country attending the IAS conference in Brazil .

CAB News

• Discussed changing of By-Laws to reflect meeting quarterly as opposed to monthly.
• Briefly discussed application for funding of the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit in Galveston .
• Group discussion of CAB budget for refreshments.  Outreach Coordinator (Denise Justice) will report back during next meeting once she speaks to the accountant.   
• Group discussion of solicitation input for the letter to Drs. Parisi and Urban regarding staff reduction in clinic.  Amendments to proposed letter were submitted by Dennis, Patrick and Tommy.  Outreach Coordinator proofed letter for typos/grammatical errors for the CAB before Chairman signed off on the final draft. 
• Dennis reminded everyone that A.C.C.T. now has a regular HIV support group meeting at their facility on Wednesdays, beginning August 3^rd.  This support group is led by Sue Brooks from The Gulf Coast Center from 12:30 – 2:30pm.
• Group discussed inviting Dr. McNamara ( Houston , Tx ) to give a presentation on Sculptra at the next meeting.  Our guest, Mr. Patrick D., expressed that he did not think it would be reasonable to ask him to come to Galveston unless we had an event of some significance planned.  He felt in would be in our best interest and that of Dr. McNamara’s to present at a much larger group than the size of our current CAB.
• The board members discussed having the next meeting off campus and suggestion sites were William Temple or the Universalist Church .  CAB member MaryAnn Cook said she would be responsible for contacting those locations and would report back via email her outcome.
• There was no special election for CAB secretary as no one was nominated.  The election was waived until the next meeting by unanimous vote.

Community Outreach  

·         Pade asked for the CAB’s assistance in Latino AIDS Awareness Day on Saturday, October 15^th.  He is working closely with others in the community and our Outreach Coordinator (Denise) to have a successful event.   

·         Robert and Denise reminded everyone about The United States Conference on AIDS (USCA) coming to Houston on Sept. 29 – Oct. 3^rd.  Robert and Pade requested that anyone who could volunteer would be appreciated by the USCA.  Robert stated that the USCA will exchange volunteering for free admittance.

·         A.C.C.T. is planning a World AIDS Day event with an education outreach theme to the schools and a formal unveiling of their new sculpture.

NEXT CAB MEETING 

When:       Tuesday, September 27, 2005, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.  
                  Refreshments and light meal available at 5:15 p.m.
                  *NOTE:  Due to Hurricane Rita evacuation of Galveston Island, the September meeting was                       cancelled and the next scheduled CAB meeting date will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2005                   from 5:30 – 7:00pm; for now, we will still meet in the conference room at Marvin Graves
                 building (info below) as no alternative site has been located for the group to meet off campus.

Where:     UTMB-Marvin Graves Building, 1012 Texas Ave. (The Strand), 4th floor Conference Room #4.208.  Public parking available at Garage #2 next to the UTMB Emergency Room on Harborside Drive.  Parking tokens available to meeting  attendees.  (See map for directions.)

·         Revision of our by-laws
