Eight
CAB members, 4 staff members and
1 guest attended the July 2003 meeting of
the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).
Dr. Roberts opened the meeting by welcoming guest and members. He then provided an update on the status of our sight evaluation and its impact on release of funding, the AACTG's continuing evaluation for our unit in September, and the Principal Investigator search. He reported that recompetition for units will be delayed due to uncertainty by DAIDS as to future organization structure/needs.
Dr. Lau mad an informative presentation on co-infection of HIV+ patients with hepatitis. HCV condition is present in about 30% of persons with HIV. She covered vaccination against HAB and HBV and the role of HCV in HIV disease. She has started an HCV-HIV co-infection clinic on Thursdays in our Clinic, which should make treatment more accessible for our dual diagnosis patients.
The Outreach Committee presented a sample of the condom "matchbook" proposed as promotional item, the matchbook cover will read HIV/AIDS Care and Clinical Research with the ACTU contact information and "Play it Safe". The group agreed that this would be a popular promotional item for the Unit. ACTU staff follow-up with production arrangements.
Dennis handed out Smallpox vaccination recommendations for HIV infected individuals.
Dennis reported on arrangements for presentation by Dwayne Haught, Manager of the Texas HIV Medication Program, at the August CAB meeting. This meeting will be held at the Island Community Center. Dennis provided a mailing list for the event. A draft flier was presented. ACTU staff will handle flier mail out. It was agreed that the ACTU would be able to provide soft drinks and snacks. Dr. Roberts is planning to make introductions at this meeting and a table will be set up for ACTU information. CAB Members will be helping staff at this event.
