Six CAB members, 2 staff members and 1 guest attended the January 2004 meeting of the UTMB Galveston AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Community Advisory Board (CAB).
Two protocols were discussed at the last ACTU staff meeting:
· A5197 site draft - Merck vaccine study received a favorable response; vaccine requires ultracold storage not currently available at our site.
· A5201 query - Discontinuation of standard triple combo therapy for boosted atazanavir single therapy received an unfavorable response.
The search for a new PI continues, in which Dr. O’Brien is still a candidate.

A memo was sent to all ACTG PIs
and study coordinators outlining new requirements for revising the CAB handbook.
Anthony will review our site's handbook to meet these requirements.
Robert clarified that a business section has been added to the monthly CAB conference call. A roll call will be taken on these calls to monitor site participation in these conference calls. The CAB conference calls are held the last Thursday of every month. Robert stated that he would represent our site on the calls, along with anyone else that wants to participate. The next call will be on February 26 at 12:40 PM local time. Toll free # 1 888 422 7101, access code 240946. The monthly CAB business call is open to CAB liaisons or a CAB representative. Robert will also represent our site, as well as Pade, our CAB liaison on these calls.
The focus of the January CAB meeting was community outreach. In 2003, the UTMB/ACTU participated in 15 community events in our outreach efforts, and listing 5 upcoming events. There is now a CAB Outreach/Community Education Event Report to be completed by the volunteer who covers an event to document and evaluate participation. Several ideas were discussed regarding future outreach efforts:
· A forum to inform the community of the various treatment options available locally.
·
A shirt with the UTMB/ACTU CAB logo provided by the site for CAB
members to wear when volunteering at outreach events to present a professional
and polished appearance.
