HIV
clinical trials have contributed to advances in HIV treatment that have
increased both the quality of life and life expectancy of many people living
with HIV and AIDS today.
The AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) at UTMB Galveston has been
conducting HIV clinical trials for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, opportunistic
infections and associated conditions since 1992.
UTMB’s ACTU is part of the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group (AACTG), a
national network of
32 research sites located across the United States and in Puerto Rico.
The AACTG network is funded through the National Institutes of Health,
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
It is dedicated to conducting HIV/AIDS research and providing access to
participation in HIV clinical trials, ultimately resulting in new drugs and
improvements in treatments, clinical care and qualify of life for persons with
HIV infection.
The
ACTU at UTMB is located on Galveston Island, approximately 50 miles south
of Houston, Texas.
The research clinic is housed within the Virology/Infectious Diseases
Clinic located in the Rebecca Sealy Building, at 8th & Postoffice
Streets.
The ACTU staff is under the direction of William A. O'Brien, MD and
includes physicians, nurses and physician assistants with extensive experience
in HIV care and research.
UTMB’s
ACTU conducts HIV trials or studies that are sponsored by the AACTG and by
pharmaceutical companies.
Many different types of trials are offered.
Trials are designed to answer specific scientific questions and may be
appropriate for persons new or naïve to HIV treatment, on treatment that is no
longer working or tolerable, interested in building up their immune system or in
structured treatment interruptions, co-infected with hepatitis, battling
peripheral neuropathy, fat wasting or other HIV-associated conditions or
complications, including opportunistic infections.
There are also gender specific studies for HIV+ women. Currently
enrolling studies are described on a separate web page.
The
majority of studies are open to adult women and men, 18 years of age or older,
who meet protocol qualifications – which are different for each study.
Studies provide study drug(s) and study-related clinic visits, exams and
labs at no cost to participants and may provide some assistance with travel and
child care expenses.
Lab and exam results can be shared with the participant’s primary care
provider if desired.
